The laser has established itself in medical technology wherever work must be small, clean and free of tool contact. Stents and cannulae are cut from thin-walled tubing with kerfs in the hundredths range; housings, implant components and instruments are welded, often with seams that cannot be reworked afterwards; surfaces are structured to promote bone ingrowth.

What matters is not the power of the machine but the heat-affected zone. Every laser process introduces energy, and what lies beside it changes its microstructure: tempering colours, loss of hardness, residual stresses and, in the worst case, microcracks. With stainless steel there is the added point that the passive layer is destroyed in the seam — without post-treatment, corrosion starts there. This is why a laser weld in medical technology is almost always followed by pickling, passivation or electropolishing.

For buyers, questions about shielding gas, seam inspection and post-treatment are therefore more revealing than the make of the machine. And because a weld seam cannot be fully assessed non-destructively, laser welding is a process requiring validation — with everything that entails.
