Injection Moulding

Injection moulding is the method of choice once volumes come into play — and in medical technology it is also a process requiring validation. The reason is simple: whether a part carries internal voids, weld lines in the wrong place or residual stresses cannot be seen from outside. ISO 13485 therefore requires evidence that the process delivers the same result within defined limits.

The tool is decisive. Gate type and position determine weld lines and warpage, temperature control determines cycle time and dimensional accuracy, ejection determines surface and residual stress. A tool for medical technology is also designed for cleanability and is often used in an environment that imposes its own requirements — cleanroom moulding is not a buzzword but a structural and organisational decision.

Three questions are worth asking: where does the tool come from and who owns it? How is the process monitored — are injection pressure curves recorded, or are dimensions merely spot-checked? And which materials run on the same machines? Cross-contamination is a topic raised in audits when medical-grade resins are involved.
