Endoscopy brings together one of the technically most varied supply chains in medical technology: optics and rod lens systems, flexible video endoscopes, cold light sources and light guide cables, insufflators, suction units and the entire field of endoscopic instruments from grasping forceps to HF electrodes. Added to this is the periphery — camera systems, documentation, reprocessing technology and leak testing.

In the register, all sub-fields are grouped under this specialist area, from the arthroscope to the cystoscope. That is a deliberate choice: the manufacturing and supply structures are all but identical across the disciplines — precision machining, soldering and bonding processes for optics, plastic injection moulding for single-use components and assembly under controlled conditions. Anyone able to manufacture a ureteroscope will as a rule also master the hysteroscope.

Three questions are central for buyers. First, interface compatibility — optics, light guides and instruments must fit the systems established in the market. Second, reprocessability: autoclavable design, validated reprocessing instructions and the separation of single-use and reusable components. Third, repairability, because endoscope repair and refurbishment form a service market of their own with its own regulatory pitfalls. The register therefore also lists specialist repair service providers as a separate role.
