Surgical Instruments

Surgical instruments are the historical heart of the medical technology region around Tuttlingen — and to this day one of the most densely populated categories in the register. The spectrum ranges from classic scissors, clamps, forceps and needle holders through specialist instruments for individual disciplines to microsurgical sets with tolerances in the hundredths of a millimetre. Manufacturing is predominantly from instrument steels such as 1.4441 and 1.4034, and increasingly from titanium where weight or MRI compatibility matters.

For buyers, alongside the catalogue range it is above all the depth of in-house manufacturing that decides the matter: who forges, hardens, grinds and laser-marks on their own premises? Who supplies to customer drawings, and who only standard goods? A second criterion is reprocessability — validated reprocessing in line with the requirements of the German Instrument Reprocessing Working Group (AKI) and documented material certificates for each batch are, in an audit, the difference between a supplier and a risk.

In regulatory terms, surgical instruments are predominantly Class I or Ir (reusable) products under the MDR. That sounds like a low hurdle, but since 2021 it has meant involving a notified body for the reprocessing aspects for the first time — a point that affects small manufacturers and own-brand labellers alike. The register can be filtered specifically for manufacturers holding ISO 13485 certification, with in-house machining or with a complete service from blank to sterile packaging.
