ISO 14001 describes an environmental management system: a company identifies its environmental aspects, evaluates them, sets objectives and demonstrates that it meets binding obligations. In medical technology it is not a regulatory requirement — it sits alongside the MDR, not within it. It has nonetheless gained importance, from two directions.

First, hospitals and purchasing groups increasingly ask for it. Sustainability criteria have arrived in tenders, and anyone unable to provide evidence loses ground in the evaluation without the product being at fault. Second, reporting obligations cascade downwards: companies that must report themselves request data from their suppliers — energy consumption, waste volumes, emissions per unit.

For medical technology this is a tense relationship. Single-use products, sterile barriers and validated packaging cannot be reduced at will without touching conformity; every material change brings biocompatibility, sterilisation validation and documentation with it. The providers listed here usually hold the certification alongside ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 — where manufacturing depth and energy use carry weight in the first place.
