In medical technology, technical cleanliness is a measurable state, not an impression. Whatever adheres to a component — chips, cutting fluid, polishing compound, particles from the environment — can impair biocompatibility, sterilisability and function. This is assessed through residual contamination analysis: components are rinsed under defined conditions, the particles filtered and counted by size and number.

Accordingly it is the process, not the machine, that decides. Aqueous cleaning with alkaline or neutral media covers most cases; solvent processes are used where oils are stubborn or water cannot reach into gaps; ultrasound helps with undercuts but can attack sensitive surfaces. Rinsing, drying and subsequent handling are as critical as the cleaning step itself — a clean part on a dirty tray is not a clean part.
