Silicone is irreplaceable in medical technology wherever softness, resilience and long-term tissue compatibility come together: catheters and tubing, seals and membranes, drains, breast implants, soft grip components. Unlike thermoplastics it is not melted but cross-linked — either platinum-catalysed as liquid silicone rubber in injection moulding, or peroxide-cured as solid silicone.

The difference matters considerably for medical devices. Platinum-cured grades leave no cross-linking residues requiring assessment and are the norm for body contact. Peroxide-cured grades need a post-curing step to drive off cleavage products. In both cases silicone absorbs fats and disinfectants, swells and releases what it has absorbed — so for biocompatibility assessment, what it contacts in use is decisive.

For buyers, the combination of grade, hardness in Shore A, biocompatibility evidence and sterilisation suitability is what counts. Silicone tolerates steam, gamma and ethylene oxide well, which simplifies selection. Processing is harder: demoulding, flash and tackiness require experience — tools for liquid silicone are not the same as for thermoplastics.
